Ethan took a mellowing sip of his caramel latte as he left the cafe'. The partially cloudy morning had brought with it a cool, crisp, chill but the warmth of his drink counteracted it nicely. Plus, he'd opted for one of his old plain blue hooded jackets instead of the black leather one that he'd been wearing. He thought it might provide more warmth but now he considered that, maybe, he just wanted to have a bit of his old self back.
Not that he didn't love, or even sometimes revel, in the fact that he was essentially a divine being. It was a vast change from what he'd considered himself before; a nobody. And certainly he was happy to have Grady in his life, even if he was a little miffed at him at the moment. Overall, though, being special meant you never had a moment when you weren't, well...special. A part of him was longing for that forgotten safety net of anonymity that he'd taken for granted, and even loathed. Being a nobody had its perks too. No one expected anything from you and you didn't expect anything from them.
Ethan shuffled down the steps of the cafe' toward Grady's car; which he'd borrowed since he knew Grady wouldn't be driving himself anywhere anytime soon. He was about to hop in and head to Arthur's house when he saw a familiar face strolling down the sidewalk across the street.
His short blond curly hair was practically glistening in the sunlight and he walked with his head held high. He had the demeanor of a dandy prince surveying a kingdom that clearly wasn't up to his standards but that he tolerated out of a pretense of good humor.
The man donned a smart brown plaid button-up overcoat, made up of criss-crossing mocha and sepia toned stripes. A cobalt blue scarf was fashioned neatly around his neck and, though Ethan couldn't imagine why he'd need anything to keep him warm, he also wore matching brown leather gloves.
He carried on, obliviously wrapped up in thought, without so much as a glance in Ethan's direction.
Without a second thought, Ethan found himself crossing the street once an opening in traffic allowed him to and trotted up beside the man.
"Marcus?" Ethan greeted with surprise.
The vampire, lassoed from his mental musings, turned to see who'd approached him. He smiled pleasantly as he saw his approacher and came to a standstill.
"Ethan,â he greeted in return. "What are the odds I'd run into you? Curse of a small town, I suppose. Unless, of course, you've been following me."
"What? No,â Ethan assured. Suddenly, he felt nervous and began second guessing his own resolve to confront the vampire alone. "I was just grabbing a coffee,â he held up the paper cup as though a visual illustration were necessary.
"Yes, I can see that,â Marcus smirked with coy amusement. "I was merely joking. Partially, anyway."
"What are you doing out? In the day? In the sun?" Ethan was a bumbling mess as immediately dove for answers.
